Presentation Abstract:

This presentation will provide an overview of new and emerging health, safety and environmental standards such as:

·        Recycling Industry Operating System (RIOS) – This is an integrated quality/environmental/health & safety management system standard for the scrap and recycling industry. The standard is based on ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.  The standard is fairly recent (2006) and is being used to certify scrap and recycling facilities who are members of ISRI.

·        Electronic Waste Standards

·        Responsible Recycling (R2) Practices – This standard provides requirements for disposal of electronic equipment, including computers and peripheral equipment, cell phones, pagers, PDAs, copiers, fax machines, printers, and other electronic equipment.  This standard was released October 2008 and is used to certify facilities disposing and recycling electronic waste.

·        e-Steward – This standard was released in July 2009.  Similar to R2, this standard was developed to address the United Nations Basal Convention requirements for responsibly disposing electronic waste, and is being used to certify facilities that handle electronic waste.

·        Greenhouse Gas – Although this is a politically charged topic, a number of developments are underway including regulation for reporting, regional greenhouse gas programs, reporting protocols, and ISO standards development.

·        Environmental Footprint Standards – There is a growing concern about environmental information for products.  ISO is in the process of developing standards for determining the carbon footprint and water footprint for products and facilities.  These standards are in the early stages of development but are on a fast track.

·        This presentation will also briefly discuss planned changes to the following standards:

·        ISO 19011 – ISO 19011 is being revised to expand its application to all types of management system audits and auditing.

·        ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 – Future plans for revision.
